The Muse Luncheon

As a noun, a muse is someone who inspires creativity. Or sometimes, a muse is a place that inspires creativity. As a verb, to muse is to think deeply about something. It is for all these definitions of "Muse” that our new luncheon event supporting the Hermitage endowment, is appropriate.

The muse luncheon has ambitions to inspire creativity, to present national speakers whose creative work represents the pinnacle of accomplishment, whose creative output inspires us all, and whose life work compels us to think deeply and richly.

Our inaugural Muse Luncheon in January 2017 showcased the truly affecting speaker Oskar Eustis. Oskar is the celebrated Artistic Director of New York’s Public Theatre. As the artistic heir of Joseph Papp, Oskar has been the driving force behind the development of many seminal plays and musicals that have now been written into our national theatrical history.

Oskar commissioned Angels In America and directed its premiere. As the Public Theatre Artistic Director, he developed Fun Home and Hamilton, both Tony and Pulitzer-winning musicals. It’s commonly accepted that Oskar Eustis is among the most successful, and consequential producers of our time.

And it was as “muse” to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton’s composer, author, and star, that Oskar worked to guide the development of the show from “concept album” to full blown generational Broadway hit. Oskar will speak of his experiences working with Lin-Manuel in this process and about the extraordinary smash hit it has become.

Stay tuned for the announcement of next year's anticipated speaker.

Proceeds from the Muse Luncheon are committed to the Hermitage Artist Retreat Founders' Fund endowment.
